Ontario requires auto insurers to offer a discount to drivers who install winter tires. That rule has been in place since 2016. Even so, each insurer runs its discount a little differently, and the details are spelled out in your own policy.
The quickest way to get it right is to ask good questions before you book your tire appointment. Below are eight questions to bring to your insurer or broker, with a short note on why each one matters for your Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac.
Question 1: Does My Policy Include the Winter Tire Discount?
Start here. Every Ontario insurer must offer the discount, but that does not mean it is already on your policy. Many drivers need to ask for it.
Ask your insurer to check your current policy. If the discount is missing, ask what you need to do to add it this season.
Question 2: How Much Is the Discount?
The amount varies by insurer. One company’s discount can look quite different from another’s, so ask for the figure that applies to your policy.
Knowing the number helps you plan. It also gives you a clear way to compare offers if you shop around for insurance at renewal time.
Question 3: Which Installation Dates Count?
Insurers can set their own qualifying installation dates. Ask when your winter tires need to go on, and how long they need to stay on, for the discount to apply.
Winter tires work best once temperatures stay around or below 7°C. Once you know your insurer’s dates, book your appointment early so it lands inside that window.
Question 4: Which Tires Qualify, and Do All-Weather Tires Count?

Four winter tires are expected. Ask your insurer to confirm that, then look for the three-peak mountain and snowflake (3PMSF) symbol on the sidewall. It marks tires that pass a severe-snow standard.
All-weather tires also carry the 3PMSF symbol and can stay on all year. Some insurers accept them for the discount and some do not, so confirm before you buy. Standard all-season tires generally do not qualify.
Watch for the M+S (mud and snow) marking too. It is a different, less strict standard than the 3PMSF symbol, so ask your insurer before counting on it.
Question 5: What Proof Do You Need?
Insurers may set their own proof requirements. Most ask for an invoice or installation record, but ask exactly what yours wants and how to send it.
Keep your invoice somewhere safe all season. A photo on your phone or a copy in your glovebox means you can answer quickly if your insurer asks.
Question 6: Does the Discount Renew Each Year?
Ask if the discount stays on your policy automatically at renewal or if you need to confirm your winter tires again each season. Ask if they want fresh proof every year.
The answer tells you what to save. If your insurer asks for proof each season, keep every year’s invoice or installation record with your policy papers.
Question 7: Does It Apply to Every Vehicle on My Policy?
Many households insure more than one vehicle. Ask how the discount works for each one, and if every vehicle needs its own set of four winter tires to qualify.
This matters for planning. If you are only equipping one vehicle this fall, you will know which policy line gets the discount.
Question 8: What If I Switch Insurers Mid-Season?

Each insurer sets its own dates and proof rules. If you move to a new company partway through winter, ask the new insurer how they handle a winter tire discount for tires that are already installed.
Bring your invoice or installation record to the new insurer. Having the date and tire details on paper makes the switch much simpler.
Before You Call: Have These Ready
A few details make the conversation faster:
- Your policy number
- Your tire invoice or installation record, if your tires are already on
- The tire model, so you can confirm the 3PMSF symbol
- The vehicles on your policy that will run winter tires
