2026 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac SUVs Ranked by Passenger Space for Large Ontario Families

A black GMC SUV on a rocky terrain with mountains in the background under a partly cloudy sky.

Every three-row SUV promises room for seven or eight people. The honest question is whether the people in the back row are comfortable after an hour, or folded up and counting the minutes.

Third-row legroom answers that question better than any other number, and cargo space behind that third row answers the next one: where does the luggage go once everybody is aboard? Ranked on those two measurements, the 2026 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac three-row lineup sorts into three clear tiers.

At a Glance: 2026 Three-Row SUVs by Third-Row Space

Tier One: The Extended-Length Full-Size SUVs

The Suburban, Yukon XL and Escalade ESV sit at the top, and it is not close. All three stretch the wheelbase behind the rear axle, which is where third-row passengers and their bags actually live.

At 932 mm, third-row legroom in the Suburban and Yukon XL runs 46 mm ahead of their standard-length siblings. The Escalade ESV edges them by a single millimetre at 933 mm. More telling is what happens behind that row.

  • 1,175 L behind the third row in all three, enough for a family’s suitcases with every seat occupied
  • 2,650 L to 2,665 L behind the second row once the third row folds
  • Up to 4,092 L in the Suburban and Yukon XL with both rows down
  • Third-row shoulder room of 1,595 mm, which is what keeps three across from feeling like a squeeze

This tier suits families who fill all three rows regularly and still need to pack. If your weekend routine involves hockey bags, a cooler and six people, this is the group to shop.

Tier Two: Standard-Length Full-Size SUVs

The Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade give up the extended rear section and 289 mm of overall length. Third-row legroom lands at 886 mm, still generous by any standard, with 722 L behind that row.

Second-row space is where this tier holds its ground. The Tahoe and Yukon offer 1,067 mm of second-row legroom, matching their extended-length siblings exactly. The Escalade posts 1,060 mm. Nobody in the middle row gives anything up.

Fold the third row and cargo opens to 2,053 L in the Tahoe and Yukon, 2,064 L in the Escalade. Maximum capacity runs from 3,412 L in the Escalade to 3,477 L in the Yukon.

The trade is straightforward: you keep nearly all of the passenger room and lose the deep cargo well behind row three. For families who use the third row for kids a few times a week rather than adults every day, that trade often makes sense.

Tier Three: Midsize Three-Row SUVs

The Traverse, Acadia and Enclave share a platform and share their interior numbers almost exactly. Third-row legroom sits at 816 mm across all three, with 648 L to 651 L behind that row.

Second-row legroom of 1,053 mm is only 14 mm short of the Tahoe, which surprises people. The real difference shows up in third-row shoulder room, where this tier ranges from 1,466 mm to 1,472 mm, roughly 125 mm narrower than the full-size group.

Seating counts vary here:

  • Chevrolet Traverse: seven-passenger standard, eight-passenger available on LT AWD
  • GMC Acadia: eight-passenger standard on Elevation AWD, seven-passenger on AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate
  • Buick Enclave: seven-passenger across Preferred, Sport Touring and Avenir, with 4,454 L of total passenger volume

Where the Electric Three-Rows Land

Two 2026 EVs belong in this conversation. The Cadillac Escalade IQL posts 933 mm of third-row legroom, matching the Escalade ESV, with 685 L behind that row and 3,545 L maximum.

The Cadillac VISTIQ takes a different approach at 778 mm of third-row legroom and 430 L behind row three, paired with 1,218 L behind the second row. It is the compact option in the electric three-row group, built around 615 hp and a 102 kWh battery rather than maximum cargo.

Which Tier Is Right for Your Family?

Start with how often the third row carries adults. If the answer is weekly, the extended-length tier earns its size. If it is occasional, the standard-length full-size SUVs give you the same second-row comfort for less vehicle.

If your third row mostly carries kids and your cargo runs to backpacks rather than luggage, the midsize tier holds its own on legroom and costs you far less parking anxiety.
