2027 Chevrolet Equinox or 2027 GMC Terrain: Shared Roots, Different SUV Personalities

A black GMC SUV drives on a scenic road at sunset, overlooking hills and a coastal view.

The 2027 Chevrolet Equinox and 2027 GMC Terrain share the same engine, the same transmission and the same 2,730 mm wheelbase. What separates them is everything you see and touch: screens, seats, trim character and styling.

This guide sorts those differences for Ontario compact-SUV shoppers, so you can match a model and a trim to the way you actually drive.

One Powertrain, Two Different Cabins

Under the hood the two are twins: a turbocharged 1.5 L four-cylinder making 175 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, an 8-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive standard on every trim of both. That settles powertrain before you start comparing.

The Equinox posts the lower fuel-consumption ratings in the city and on the highway. The highway gap widens on the Terrain AT4 and Denali, which matters if your week is mostly 400-series commuting.

Space tells a different story. The Terrain gives front passengers more legroom and a little more headroom on the Elevation and AT4, while rear legroom is nearly a tie. Cargo volume is identical on both bases, so the Equinox’s extra length shows up in its proportions, not in the load floor.

Towing is level at 1,500 lbs (680 kg). On the Terrain, the AT4 and Denali include the Trailering Package; on the Elevation it is optional, and the hitch alone is rated at 1,000 lbs (454 kg).

Screens and Everyday Tech

This is where the two feel most different from the driver’s seat. The Equinox carries an 11.3-inch display with Google built-in beside an 11-inch driver information centre. The Terrain steps up to a 15-inch GMC Premium Infotainment System with available Google built-in, a far bigger canvas for navigation and apps.

Much else is shared. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 6-speaker audio system, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and remote start are standard on both. Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Zone Steering Assist are standard on every trim of each model.

So the screen is the tech decision. If you want maps and media on a panoramic-style display, the Terrain answers that. If 11.3 inches covers your needs, the Equinox gives you the same phone integration and driver aids without the larger dash centrepiece.

Equinox Trims: Choose by Presentation

The LT is the straightforward entry. It has cloth seats, a 6-way manual driver seat, single-zone manual climate control and a manual liftgate on 17-inch Grazen wheels. Power driver seat, dual-zone climate and the AutoSense power liftgate are optional. The LT does not offer ventilated front seats or heated rear outboard seats, so it tops out sooner than the others.

The ACTIV is the adventure trim, with 17-inch Dark Android wheels on all-terrain tires, sueded microfibre seating and roof rails. It also makes the 8-way power driver seat, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging and the power liftgate standard.

The RS is the sport look: 19-inch Carbon flash wheels, Evotex seating, a flat-bottom steering wheel and high gloss Black mirror caps. Both ACTIV and RS can add Convenience Package III for ventilated front seats, a power passenger seat, driver memory and heated rear outboard seats. A 20-inch wheel is optional on the RS.

Terrain Trims: Three Clear Directions

GMC separates its trims by purpose more explicitly. Each one points at a different buyer:

  • Elevation: the everyday entry, with premium cloth seating, single-zone automatic climate control, LED headlamps and a manual liftgate on 17-inch Grazen wheels. The Elevation Premium Package adds Convenience Package II content, CoreTec seating and 19-inch Technical Grey wheels.
  • AT4: the adventure trim, with an AEV stamped-steel front skid plate, 17-inch Dark Android wheels on all-terrain tires and 166 mm of ground clearance. The Elevation sits at 146 mm.
  • Denali: the premium trim, with perforated leather-appointed seating, ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a panoramic power sunroof and 19-inch Midnight Silver wheels. Technology Package II, with a Surround Video Recorder, comes standard.

Hill Descent Control is standard on all three. The AT4 and Denali add uplevel LED headlamps with animated walk-up lighting, plus a power liftgate and an 8-way power driver seat.

Which GM Compact SUV Fits Your Drive?

A sleek green SUV drives along a lakeside road, with a scenic view of water and hills in the background.

If you want a longer body, the lower fuel-consumption ratings and Chevrolet styling you can dial toward sporty with the RS or toward rugged with the ACTIV, the Equinox is the right fit. Its equipment is easy to read: an 11.3-inch display, strong standard safety tech and a short list of upgrade packages.

If you want the 15-inch display, extra front legroom and a trim ladder that spells out its purpose, the Terrain is the right fit. Pick the AT4 for the skid plate, extra ground clearance and the hitch that ships with it. Pick the Denali for ventilated leather-appointed seating and a sunroof. Pick the Elevation for a simpler cabin with room to add packages.

Set your budget first, then choose the trim. Both lineups reward that order, because the equipment that separates trims is clear on each side.

Choosing Between the 2027 Equinox and Terrain

The Equinox and Terrain share a powertrain, cargo volume and tow rating. The decision rests on display size, front-seat room, trim character and how much equipment you want standard.
