2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or 2027 GMC Sierra 1500: Comparing Trims, Engines and Technology

The 2027 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 share engines and a transmission, so Ontario truck shoppers are really choosing between two ways of organizing the same hardware. Chevrolet builds a seven-trim ladder with three lifted off-road steps. GMC builds six trims that lean on premium equipment and technology.

This guide sorts out what the two trucks have in common, where they differ, and which buyer each one suits.

Shared Powertrains, Side by Side

Both trucks offer four engines, each paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Maximum ratings vary by cab, drivetrain, trim and package.

What the Four Engines Mean for Your Work

The enhanced TurboMax adds 40 hp and 25 lb-ft over the current engine, with a new turbocharger and redesigned pistons. It carries the highest payload rating on both trucks. If your loads are heavy and your trailers are modest, start here.

The 5.7 L V8 tops the towing column on both trucks. It is the engine for a buyer who tows often and wants a gas V8 doing it.

The 6.6 L V8 is the power pick, and Chevrolet and GMC both call it the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in the class. The trade-off is clear in the table: the lowest payload and a towing rating close to the TurboMax. Choose it for the way it drives, not for the heaviest work.

The Duramax diesel is the long-haul tow engine. Its 495 lb-ft sits behind a 12,000 lbs (5,443 kg) rating on the Silverado and 12,100 lbs (5,488 kg) on the Sierra.

Chevrolet’s Trim Ladder and Off-Road Choices

Silverado 1500 runs seven trims: Work Truck, Custom, Z71, Custom Trail Boss, Trail Boss, ZR2 and High Country. Each step has a job.

Work Truck is built around fleet uptime, with configurations suited to common upfits and interiors that are easy to clean. Custom adds dual exhaust and 20-inch Technical Gray wheels. Z71 is now its own trim, with the off-road package standard: skid plates, hill descent control and off-road suspension.

Three trims carry a 2-inch lift. Two of them sit below ZR2. Custom Trail Boss is the entry point, pairing the lift with 34-inch tires. Trail Boss adds 34-inch MT tires, a dedicated off-road hood and two interior themes for drivers who want attitude without stepping up to ZR2.

ZR2 is the full commitment: 35-inch MT tires, standard front and rear e-lockers, and Multimatic DSSV dampers with jounce dampers. The available ZR2 Bison Edition adds 18-inch beadlock-capable wheels and a full set of skid plates.

High Country is the flagship, with 22-inch After Midnight wheels, a panoramic sunroof and light or dark interior themes.

GMC’s Premium Ladder

Sierra 1500 has six trims: Pro, Elevation, AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate. GMC spreads its premium content across the whole lineup.

Pro is the work-focused entry, with the TurboMax, a trailer hitch and a trailer brake controller as standard. Elevation adds bucket seats, a MultiPro Tailgate with 16 bed tie-downs and an articulating 16.3-inch screen with hidden storage.

AT4 starts with the 5.7 L V8, a 2-inch lift, monotube shocks and 34-inch all-terrain tires. Super Cruise is standard on it. AT4X goes further. The Duramax diesel is standard, along with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials and a Baja drive mode. The AEV Edition package adds skid plates, recovery hooks and 18-inch beadlock-capable wheels.

Denali moves comfort forward with the 5.7 L V8, Adaptive Ride Control and a panoramic sunroof. Denali Ultimate adds the 6.6 L V8, 14-way massaging front seats, 16-speaker Bose audio, open pore forged birch wood and 22-inch wheels.

Cab, Bed and Drivetrain Choices

Sierra ratings show how much configuration matters. The TurboMax tows 9,400 lbs (4,264 kg) in a Regular Cab 2WD, and 8,800 lbs (3,992 kg) in a Crew Cab 4WD. Moving to 4WD costs towing on that engine, so it is worth deciding if you need the traction.

The 5.7 L V8 reaches 13,500 lbs (6,123 kg) in a Double Cab 4WD with the Max Trailering Package, and 13,300 lbs (6,033 kg) in a Crew Cab with it. The diesel’s 12,100 lbs (5,488 kg) is also a Crew Cab 4WD with that package. Without it, the Crew Cab 2WD diesel is rated at 10,100 lbs (4,581 kg).

Sierra’s bed carries 16 standard tie-down locations, and the MultiPro Tailgate adds four more tie-downs and an integrated ruler. Silverado maximums likewise vary by configuration, trim and package.

Technology: Two Takes on One Digital Cockpit

Every Silverado 1500 has a 16.3-inch centre display and a 12.2-inch driver information centre. ZR2 and High Country add an 11.5-inch front passenger screen, a Head-Up Display and a rear camera mirror, for more than 60 inches of displays. A reconfigurable Multi-Flex centre console adds storage, and Super Cruise with trailering capability is offered with a 3-year plan included.

Sierra pairs a 16.3-inch centre screen with a 12.2-inch Driver Information Centre as well, on GM’s new interface. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay sit alongside native features, with Google built-in services including Google Gemini and Google Maps. The articulating screen with hidden storage is standard on Elevation and Denali Ultimate. The 11.5-inch passenger screen is standard on AT4X and Denali Ultimate, and comes with the Technology Package on AT4 and Denali.

Towing tech is a Sierra strength. The available camera suite offers up to 19 views, including Hitch View, a transparent trailer view and underbody views with a wash system. An in-vehicle Trailering App and an available Trailer Brake Gain Assistant round it out. Super Cruise is standard on AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate, and available on Elevation.

Which GM Pickup Fits Your Drive?

  • A working truck: For a fleet or upfit build, the Silverado Work Truck is configured around uptime. For an owner-operator who wants a trailer hitch and brake controller from the start, the Sierra Pro fits.
  • A lifted truck: If you want a graduated off-road ladder, with two lifted steps below ZR2, the Silverado fits. If you want off-road gear wrapped in leather-grade comfort, with a diesel standard on AT4X, the Sierra fits.
  • Heavy towing: The 5.7 L V8 or Duramax diesel suits either truck. Choose the Sierra if camera views, Trailering App and Super Cruise standard on four trims matter. Choose the Silverado if the Chevrolet trim you want carries the content you need.
  • A flagship cabin: High Country suits drivers who want a panoramic sunroof and the passenger screen on a Chevrolet. Denali Ultimate suits those who want massaging seats, a 15-inch Head-Up Display and 16-speaker audio on a GMC.
