2026 Traverse vs. Acadia: Same 328 hp Powertrain, Two Different Trim Ladders

The 2026 Chevrolet Traverse and the 2026 GMC Acadia share the same turbocharged engine, the same 8-speed automatic, and the same maximum towing capacity. For Ontario families, that common ground is reassuring, but it also makes the choice harder. The real differences live in the trim structure, seating options, and how much luxury or off-road hardware each lineup puts front and centre.

If you are weighing both, here is what actually separates them.

Powertrain: Identical From the Firewall

Both vehicles use the same 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder producing 328 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque paired with an 8-speed automatic and standard AWD across every trim. With the available Trailering Package, each can tow up to 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg).

Fuel economy is nearly the same but not identical. The Traverse posts 12.1 L/100 km city and 9.9 L/100 km highway. The Acadia rates 12.1 city and 10.1 highway. In everyday Ontario driving, neither difference is a deciding factor.

Seating: The Most Practical Split

This is the clearest fork in the road. The Acadia Elevation seats eight passengers as a standard feature, the only trim in either lineup that does so without an upgrade. For larger families or those who regularly need that third-row centre position, the Elevation removes any guesswork.

The Traverse LT offers 8-passenger seating as an available option, while the Z71 and RS are 7-passenger only. If your family occasionally uses all three rows but rarely needs eight seats, the LT’s flexibility works. If eight seats is non-negotiable, the Acadia Elevation is the right fit.

Further up the Acadia lineup, the Denali and Denali Ultimate add a 1-Touch flat-folding and Smart Slide second-row seat for easier third-row access, a feature the Traverse lineup does not list. For families who frequently board third-row passengers, that hardware matters.

Cargo volume is close enough to be a non-factor: 2,775 L behind the first row in the Traverse and 2,761 L in the Acadia.

Off-Road Trims: Z71 vs. AT4

Both lineups have a dedicated off-road trim. The Traverse Z71 brings 265/65R18 all-terrain tires, Hill Descent Control, Advanced Twin Clutch AWD, red tow hooks, and 197 mm of ground clearance. The Acadia AT4 matches that 197 mm ground clearance and all-terrain rubber, but adds steel skid plates covering the front approach and underbody, Active Torque Control AWD, and red recovery hooks.

For families who plan to use unpaved roads regularly, logging roads, gravel cottage access, or backcountry campsites, the AT4’s skid plates are standard hardware the Z71 does not include. For buyers who want the ride height and all-terrain tires for occasional gravel and light trail use, the Z71 covers that ground well without the added weight.

Both trims stand at 197 mm of ground clearance. The decision is how seriously you use it.

Premium Trims: RS vs. Denali and Denali Ultimate

The Traverse RS leans toward a sporty, blacked-out aesthetic: 22-inch wheels, standard perforated leather seating, ventilated front seats, active noise cancellation, a Bose premium audio system, and Super Cruise driver assistance all standard. The panoramic power sunroof is also standard on the RS. For buyers who want a stylish top-spec Traverse without stepping into a separate luxury brand, the RS packages a lot of content.

The Acadia Denali takes a different direction. Its signature grille, LED headlamps and LED taillamps, power tilt/telescoping steering column, memory settings, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear outboard seats are all standard, a deeper luxury feature set than the RS carries. The Denali also includes a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system standard.

The Acadia Denali Ultimate sits above any Traverse trim in content. Standard equipment includes a 16-speaker Bose Performance Series sound system, Super Cruise with a 3-year plan included, full leather massaging front seats with Paldao wood accents, a panoramic sunroof, and an 8-inch Head-Up Display. For families who want the most technology and material quality available in this segment, the Denali Ultimate reaches a level the Traverse RS lineup does not.

Which One Is Right for You?

For Ontario families who want a no-fuss three-row SUV with solid towing, an available 8-passenger layout, and a sport-styled top trim, the Traverse is the right fit. The LT handles the family utility brief cleanly, the Z71 adds genuine all-terrain capability for cottage-country use, and the RS delivers a premium interior with a sporty edge.

For buyers who need 8-passenger seating as a standard feature without an upgrade, or who want a more defined luxury progression from the base trim up, the Acadia is the better suited vehicle. The Elevation starts with more passengers standard; the AT4 adds more underbody protection than the Z71; and the Denali trims deliver luxury content and technology that goes beyond what the Traverse RS offers.

If the Denali Ultimate’s massaging seats, 16-speaker audio, and standard Super Cruise reflect your priorities, there is no Traverse equivalent.
