Why Ontario Half-Ton Buyers Get More from the 2026 Sierra 1500 Than from the Ford F-150

Half-ton shoppers in Ontario face a crowded market, but the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 holds three specific advantages the 2026 Ford F-150 cannot answer: a diesel engine option, a six-function tailgate, and off-road hardware that goes deeper than anything in Ford’s lineup. The breakdown below focuses on those decision points so you can choose the right truck for how you actually use it.

The Only Half-Ton Diesel in the Segment

The Sierra 1500 is the only half-ton truck available in Canada with a diesel powertrain option. The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six produces 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque, and it is offered from the SLE trim all the way through the Denali Ultimate. The 2026 F-150 lineup lists six engine options, all gas or hybrid, with no diesel.

That torque number shows up most clearly at the pump. The AT4 with the Duramax returns 10.7 L/100 km city and 9.3 L/100 km highway. For Ontario drivers covering significant highway distance, that efficiency advantage adds up every fill-up in a way no gas F-150 can replicate.

The F-150’s 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid does produce 570 lb-ft of torque, which is higher on paper. The Sierra’s Duramax counters with 495 lb-ft through a straightforward diesel setup, backed by a 5-year/160,000 km powertrain warranty on the diesel engine, the same extended coverage Ford used to offer on its now-discontinued diesel.

The Sierra’s gas engines are strong on their own: the 2.7L TurboMax (310 hp, 430 lb-ft) is standard on Pro through Elevation; the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 (355 hp, 383 lb-ft) is standard on the SLT; and the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 (420 hp, 460 lb-ft) is available from SLT upward. Max towing on the Pro reaches 13,200 lbs (5,987 kg).

The F-150 reaches 13,500 lbs (6,124 kg) in its highest configuration, a 300-lb edge that requires a specific axle and package. The Sierra answers with a larger short-bed cargo box, 1,781 litres versus 1,495 litres in the F-150’s 5.5-foot box, turning the tradeoff in the Sierra’s favour for buyers who carry gear as often as they tow.

AT4 and AT4X: Off-Road Depth the F-150 Tremor Does Not Reach

The F-150 Tremor raises ground clearance and adds steel skid plates. Those are useful steps. But the Tremor does not offer driver-selectable full locking differentials at both axles, and it does not carry Multimatic DSSV dampers.

The Sierra 1500 AT4X is built to a different standard. It comes standard with a 2-inch factory lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and driver-selectable full locking front and rear differentials for serious rock and mud work. AEV hot-stamped boron steel skid plates protect the front approach, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential. Ground clearance reaches 292 mm front and rear.

The AT4 sits at 282 mm with its own 2-inch factory lift, off-road-tuned suspension with Rancho monotube shocks, automatic locking rear differential, and underbody skid plates. Both AT4 trims carry red vertical recovery hooks, Hill Descent Control, a two-speed Autotrac transfer case, and the GMC MultiPro Tailgate with EZ-Lift as standard equipment.

  • AT4X ground clearance: 292 mm (front and rear)
  • AT4 ground clearance: 282 mm (front and rear)
  • AT4X differentials: Driver-selectable full locking front and rear
  • AT4X dampers: Multimatic DSSV
  • AT4X skid plates: AEV hot-stamped boron steel (front approach, transfer case, fuel tank, rear differential)

Technology and the Tailgate Advantage

The GMC MultiPro Tailgate, described as the world’s first six-function tailgate, is standard on the SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. The F-150 Pro Access tailgate swings open 100 degrees or drops conventionally, two functions. Six positions versus two changes how you load at a job site, set up at a campsite, or step up into the bed.

From the SLE trim upward, the Sierra carries a 13.4-inch GMC Premium Infotainment display with Google built-in and a 12.3-inch colour Driver Information Centre. The AT4X adds a standard 15-inch multicolour Head-Up Display and the Bose Premium Series 12-speaker system with CenterPoint surround sound. The Denali Ultimate receives both as standard as well.

Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance is available on the Denali and standard on the Denali Ultimate, with a three-year trial period included. The F-150 offers BlueCruise, a capable system; the Sierra’s Super Cruise operates across the largest hands-free highway network in North America, covering more compatible kilometres than any rival hands-free system.

Which One Is Right for You?

If a diesel engine, dedicated off-road hardware, or a six-function tailgate matters to you, the Sierra 1500 covers all three and the F-150 covers none of them. There is no diesel in the F-150 lineup, no full locking front differential on any F-150 trim, and its tailgate operates in two modes to the MultiPro’s six.

For Ontario buyers who want genuine capability without trading one strength for another, the Sierra 1500 is the clear answer.
