NEW 2018 CADILLAC XT5 (IN-DEPTH REVIEW)

Cadillac Canada and more specifically your Ontario Cadillac dealers are proud to present the new Cadillac XT5. The 2018 Cadillac XT5 has replaced the the brand’s best-selling SRX, and even with those big shoes to fill, the new XT5 brings new styling to the Cadillac SUV lineup without losing any of the renowned features of the previous models. Perfectly bridging the gap between the available sedans and the full size Escalade SUV, the XT5 offers a luxurious and spacious interior with sporty handling and a high-up driving position. This Cadillac XT5 review aims to give you some insight into this beautiful new vehicle.

Cadillac have managed to increase the interior room in the new XT5 without any significant change to the overall footprint. By extending the wheelbase and moving the wheel arches closer to the bumpers, cabin space was improved quite significantly.

The 2018 XT5 is testament to Cadillac’s focus on luxury and the use of only top quality materials in construction. As is customary on Cadillacs, the fit and finish is superb, featuring standard equipment not even available as optional extras on other vehicles. Below is a breakdown of the stunning range of XT5 trims:

The 2018 Cadillac XT5 is powered by a 3.6 L V6 engine putting out an impressive 310 horsepower, this engine is common to all trims. Torque is plentiful with 271 lb-ft at the driver’s disposal, and when fitted with the trailering package the maximum towing payload is as much as 3500 lb! All wheel drive comes as standard on the Platinum trim or as an optional extra on the Luxury and Premium Luxury trims. The clever AWD system is able to send up to 100 percent of available power to the front or rear depending on where the stability system decides it is necessary, making this Cadillac SUV extremely capable across a range of weather conditions.

Every Cadillac XT5 comes fitted with a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. Engineered for perfect harmony with the 3.6 L V6 engine, this gearbox features quick steps in between gears, ensuring great performance and fuel efficiency. Cadillac have also included their ‘Cadillac Performance Algorithm Shifting’ software, bringing slick gear changes and excellent responsiveness to changes in driving and conditions.

The 2018 Cadillac XT5 has been designed with fuel economy in mind amongst the luxury and technological features. It is significantly lighter in weight than the outgoing model and as such benefits from an increased power to weight ratio, resulting in better acceleration, and as there is less mass, enjoys lower fuel consumption. It is also equipped with a standard stop-start feature, helping you to save gas without even thinking about it. When the vehicle comes to a stand-still and the brake is pressed the engine will shut down, as soon as your foot is removed from the brake the engine seamlessly powers back up and you’re on your way again. The 3.6 L V6 also retains the capability to shut down two of its cylinders, effectively turning it in to a V4. This ingenious system seamlessly turns off the supernumerary cylinders when the ECU deems them not necessary for the current driving style or conditions, although the process is so smooth you’d never even notice if it weren’t for the indication on the gauge cluster.

Safety equipment is abundant on the XT5, with such standard features as traction control, ABS, full cabin airbags including drivers knee airbags, as well as a host of OnStar safety functions such as:

  • Roadside assistance
  • Automatic crash notification
  • Stolen vehicle assistance
  • Advanced diagnostics

The 2018 XT5 Can be equipped with the Cadillac Driver Awareness package on the Premium Luxury and Platinum trims. This package bolsters the already robust array of safety features with premium equipment such as:

The Safety Alert Seat which will vibrate to alert you to safety notifications.
Pedestrian Collision Mitigation, a semi-autonomous feature that uses camera technology to scan the road ahead to detect collision risks, and if necessary, will apply brakes on the driver’s behalf
The Lane Assist feature, which can apply corrective steering as necessary should it detect that the driver is drifting from their lane
In addition, the available Head Up Display changes the face of driving safety, providing all of the essential information you need when behind the wheel, without taking your eyes off the road.

Clever, yet simple real-world engineering has also assisted in increasing the safety features of this Cadillac SUV. The large wing mirrors have been mounted to the doors, this has created more open space in front of the driver, leading to improved frontal, driver visibility. The available rear camera mirror is also a significant safety boost: mounted within the rear view mirror there is a small monitor than be turned on or off, this monitor displays a live feed from the rear view camera mounted by the rear license plate. This creates an unobstructed view of your rear surroundings, especially important if you have large items in the trunk which may be obscuring your line of sight.

As was briefly touched upon earlier in the article, Cadillac remain committed to producing some of the finest luxury vehicles available today. By offering a choice of different seating materials, culminating with the top grain leather options found in the Platinum trim, the 2018 XT5 is modern, yet remains distinctly Cadillac. The use of piano black trim brings a swash of elegance, while soft touch and leather wrapped surfaces ensure you know exactly what it is you’re driving. If piano black isn’t your preference, Cadillac also offer genuine wood trims, the ultimate in automotive craftsmanship.

The 2018 Cadillac XT5 arrives as standard in all trims with the excellent Cadillac User Interface (CUE for short) infotainment system. New and improved, you’ll find the CUE system to be more responsive than ever. With an intuitive layout, it is the perfect accompaniment to the standard 8-speaker or available 14-speaker Bose premium audio systems. Volume is adjusted by an ingenious swipe bar below the screen, bringing a contemporary feel to the system. With a crisp display, maps have never looked better on the available satellite navigation option. For seamless smartphone integration, every 2018 Cadillac XT5 comes with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, helping this excellent Cadillac cater to most modern cellphones. USB ports are plentiful both in the front and back cabins, meaning all passengers will be able to keep devices charged on the move.

Whilst touchscreens dominate daily life, and do certainly have their place, the use of high quality rockers and switches for many of the vehicle settings adds a beautifully tactile feel to the XT5 cabin, helping the driver to stay connected to the car, physical buttons are also still present on the steering wheel for CUE menu navigation and adjustment should this be your preference.

Comfort is an essential component of any Cadillac. The XT5 certainly lives up to that reputation. When fitted with the available 20″ wheels, the suspension is also upgraded to a continuously adjusting shock system to quell the harsh ride usually associated with larger wheels. Every XT5 is tuned not only for comfort, but for sharp handling and cornering also. You’ll find it to be as composed around the bends as it is cruising comfortably on a highway.

The XT5 2018 model is incredibly spacious for both front and rear passengers alike. Thanks to the wheelbase modification, rear legroom has increased by an incredible 3.2 inches over the outgoing SRX. In addition, rear comfort is increased by way of reclining seats, enabling increased headroom for back seat passengers should they so need. The fore and aft sliding feature of the rear seats means that you will have the option of either increasing rear leg room, or increasing trunk cargo space if necessary. On the topic of cargo space, the Cadillac XT5 boasts a roomy 30 cubic feet of cargo space, and should you need to, the rear seats can be folded flat to reveal a cavernous 63 cubic feet of storage capacity. Storage compartments are well thought out in the XT5, there are hidden cubbies with security in mind as well as the large center console storage space.

As you would expect, road noise is a non-issue in the 2018 XT5. With superb sound dampening qualities, the 2018 XT5 is a quiet sanctuary at all speeds. Both ambient exterior and engine noises are dampened very well, ensuring a calm, comfortable experience.
